Fangles

That’s right, FANGLES. Fan gear + bangles = fangles dammit. Today is a good day for fake words.

As I mentioned in my earlier post the San Francisco Giants won the wild card game last night against the Pirates. I, naturally, am a Giants fan and frequently wear my black + orange gear, but while I was be-bangling myself this morning I realized I have no “official” gear. Well, except for ballcaps and hoodies. But what about official Giants jewelry? Does it even exist, you may wonder. And I am here to say, YES! It exists! Errgghh but it’s not that great :/

My favorite isn’t even a bracelet. SF 14ct Gold pendant
It’s a very simple, pretty 14ct gold SF pendant and it costs $917.99 because $920 would just be too much. Seriously, what do merchandisers have against round numbers? I know it’s a psychological sales technique but really? Does this *actually* sell better when priced at $917.99 vs $920?

Really

The next best is on the complete other side of the spectrum. It’s the money clip. Psyche. It’s the cuff made from an actual baseball for the very reasonable price of $11.99 Baseball Cuff

To find something unique and special, Etsy.com is the destination. Or crazy. Don’t forget to find something crazy… Sparkles up the wazoo Errhh ahem. Sometimes Etsy is a total strike out for being crazy crafty and not enough Crazy Crab (I see you, fellow Giants fan! THAT’S what’s up.)

So what to do? Custom, that’s what. And Etsy has a plethora of custom options. Custom stamp Here’s just one $24 example (Pittsburgh, because I’m an asshole)… I recommend requesting San Francisco or Giants or Go Giants or Gigantes or Humm Baby (my fav because I may be an asshole but I’m old school).

Welcome to Orange October.

Do you guys remember my Today’s Bangles post titled Solid Gold Lumberjack? Well, I went ahead and engraved my dad’s watch and I picked it up the other day. What do you think?

IMG_2653.JPG I remember so clearly rubbing that glass bump on the face of the watch while my dad wore it. And the calluses on his palm, this weird wart that grew under his ring finger (that he had removed eventually), and his nicely trimmed nails. Now I have just his Rolex. So I’m wearing it, the Elsa Peretti X, and the Mexican cuff. All gifts from him.

Good willing

For the most part, thrift shopping in SF is pointless. It’s all picked over, marked up, “vintage” Forever 21 pieces, or odd sizes. But there are two huge exceptions.

1. Men’s wear- I can wax poetic for hours over the incredible finds we’ve brought home for my husband. Calvin Klein button up shirts for $14, Dolce & Gabanna sweaters, great shoes. Good deals are super findable because frankly? Many guys don’t shop second hand, and those who do don’t know labels and pass over excellent items.

2. Jewelry, books, and home items at The Goodwill on Clement. My theory is this Goodwill is on the fringe of the fancy neighborhood so it receives donations of under the radar items that don’t have much of a resale market. But Clement street is very immigrant heavy, and I think the people who shop here are looking for practical items. What falls in the cross over of this Venn diagram? The less practical nicer quality stuff. Decorative vases, interesting jewelry pieces, and, well I don’t know how James Patterson books fit into my theory but I find lots of them too.

Check out today’s purchase:

A brass wire wrapped cuff, with an asymmetrical shape to it and a brass and blue lapis bangle with a tiny little heart clasp. Pretty cute, right?? Big pat on the back for me.

What do you guys think? You find any great second hand items lately?

X-Files, Part III of madly tied and filed

Last night was sweltering hot in San Francheesie. I couldn’t sleep at all. Now my one poor eye is all poofed up. My dogs and I skipped our run, and I’m drinking enough coffee to fuel a locomotive. I should probably add that SF standard of “sweltering hot” is about 70 degrees. Maybe 65. You get to 55 and I’d be complaining of the cold.

On a morning like this, I really want to believe… Do do dooo doo (that’s some spooky UFO music in written form.) Thanks to At the Library for the theme X-Files. I remember babysitting some kids and rushing them off to bed because the Smoking Man was appearing on that evening’s episode of the X-Files. Remember smoking, you guys? What an awful thing to be nostalgic for, right?

Check this cool bangle out, tho. Made in Tel Aviv from sterling silver, resin and computer printouts for a paltry sum of $400 by Moshikoart

IMG_2569.PNG It’s a pentagram! Oh snake, I am wary but it is super lovely. I like the decorative interior, that is some serious attention to detail.

Scully’s signature piece of jewelry is a gold cross necklace, but what am I? A bracelet blog. So I give you a Scullyesque gold plate cross bracelet by Moon and Lola

IMG_2570.PNG
It’s $160, which seems kind of steep for gold plate, put the real gold options were obscenely expensive. Do you think Scully would wear this?

I saved the classiest, most tasteful and finely crafted for last.

IMG_2571.PNG For $16.99 this aluminium cuff is clearly the center piece of any X-File themed bracelet collection. It’s something I can imagine Audrey Hepburn or Princess Grace Kelly would wear while traveling through Corsica. As my dad liked to quote from the Big Breakfast “Am I right?” “You’re not wrong!”

Now what’s your fav TV show? Inspire me! And how’s the weather where you’re at? I hope you are sleeping better then I, though if that last bracelet is true, maybe it’s for the best that we all sleep on high alert.

TV and jewelry

Yesterday’s post on the the Walking Dead: Sex Ed Fail and an exchange with LoveandFlats on favorite TV shows got me thinking… What other bracelets are out there based on my favorite TV shows? Well, let’s find out!

My very favorite shows are the Walking Dead, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hannibal, and Justified. Since I already covered the Walking Dead, let’s sub in LoveandFlat’s favorite show Breaking Bad.

First up: BUFFY. I both googled and Etsy-ed, but google just brought me back around to Etsy where I found a lot, A LOT, of very tweeny Buffy charm bracelets. The more uncommon are the cuffs, like this one on sale right now for $13.60 by TheTrendyGeek

IMG_2518.PNG You just can’t go wrong with the Buffy tagline. I like, too, the crooked typewriter font. It’s a subtle but pretty piece of fan jewelry.

Next: HANNIBAL. Surprisingly, Etsy offered more variety in Hannibal bracelet styles though altogether less bracelets. I want to find the most special of the options, though, and it is a $17.10 charm bracelet by FanFayreJewelry

IMG_2519.PNG It’s not overcrowded by charms which is how many charm bracelets turn out wrong. The charms include so many nuances of the Hannibal themes: the stag, knives, a clock! So subtle but fantastic. I would definitely wear this.

JUSTIFIED: This show doesn’t have the obsessive fanbase of the other shows. I wasn’t expecting to find much, and I didn’t. There is one single Justified tagged bracelet option but… It’s lovely! Made by ClosetGeekery it’s $20.

IMG_2520.PNG I would actually probably pair this guy with the Hannibal charm bracelet. They would definitely compliment one another.

Now for you, LoveandFlats, BREAKING BAD: more charm bracelets, more hand stamped silver cuffs but nothing exceptional. Which, a show like Breaking Bad? We’re looking for exceptional, inspired, and cool to wear. And this periodic table of elements for $30 by UniqueArtPendants spoke to me. Too cool for school! Wait, let me correct myself, it is exactly the right amount of cool for school.

What are your favorite shows? Let’s find some awesome fan bracelets (and, maybe even other jewelry!)

9.12.14 Golden Thai

IMG_2522.JPG
Turns out not much goes with amber except, well, amber. Today I’m wearing a pair of silver and amber twig shaped earrings from my brother’s girlfriend, an amber and silver cuff a former roommate brought back from Thailand for me, and another charm bracelet from my dad.

This one is beach themed: sea shells, starfish and such. I wish I remembered where it was from or when he gave it to me. But I don’t. It could have been 20 years ago or 5, I’m such a magpie with my bracelets. Today is maybe the first time ever that I’m wearing it. I doubt my dad would remember, either, if I could ask him. He’d probably laugh in his way and say “oh I don’t know, Pumps”… That’s what he called me. But maybe I’m wrong, maybe he would remember and now it’s all gone.

This amber and sterling cuff by theTreasuredHippie is significantly fancier then mine (I’m not even certain my cuff is *real* amber but the silver has the 925 imprint)

IMG_2525.PNG It’s $350, but maybe with this one, you can extract some DNA and clone a crew of dinosaurs. Just let me warn you away from the Raptors.

9.11.14 Fran Sandisco Summer

IMG_2501.JPG

It’s hot here today but I expect the fog will roll in later. Today’s bangles are mostly cuffs: xo Elsa Peretti, turquoise cuff I got in Maine when I was about ten, turquoise and silver bracelet from Mexico, and the horn bangles.

But look at me!
IMG_2500.JPG
I’m matching ear, neck and wrist! A turquoise heart necklace my mama gave me, and H&M hoop earrings.

I don’t know where my mom found the necklace but here’s something similar from Etsy for $6!
IMG_2503-0.PNG Dood, and it’s two for the price of one… Somebody should jump on that.

Railroad spike: I can has plz? Or No railroads are that small, please.

IMG_2485.JPG
Fancy a pretty cool skinny railroad spike cuff? But are railroad spikes actually small enough to be bracelets? Does technical correctness matter?

Regardless, I admired one of these on the arm of my neighbor. They’re made by Giles and Brother and sell for just $55. Good deal for a little unique piece. I like that you can order something special imprinted on the bracelet. It’d be a great gift from your honey to you, amirite? Send him or her this link stat.
