MIA for all the right reasons

ileava Sleeping Moon Pendant

That’s what I’ve been! MIA for all the right reasons. Two pieces of big (good) news keep interfering with my WP time. First up- I was accepted as an artist for the Startup Art Fair in San Francisco. (May 1-3 at the Hotel del Sol in San Francheesie) which is SOOOO exciting. It’s basically the most legit art show I’ve participated in to date. Click on the artists link, find my name, ahem, Margaret Timbrell… that’s me!!! But now I need to make more new work. My artwork for this show is almost entirely needlepoints so I must stitch from sun down to sun up, until my fingers turn into canvas and needle and I start dreaming about stitching. It happens. Trust me. But so, stitching and blogging are some serious conflicts.

The other big blogging conflict? Pregnancy with TWINS!! I am carrying two guppies right now. My honey and I are over the moon!! But so my main activity besides stitching? SLEEPING. Here’s my schedule: wake up at 6:30 AM. Take a nap from 9-10 AM. Walk to work. Curl up in my little nest on the floor of the storage room and nap for about an hour midday. Walk home. Go to bed at 7:30 PM. Somehow squeeze in enough stitching to make a decent show of this art fair.

Stitching and sleeping. Stitching and sleeping. What are you guys doing? Writing? How productive of you. I find writing seriously cuts into my *yawn* … yah, so…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Hope

diamond hope necklace by JR DUNN

There is so much to be hopeful for right now but I worry about hope. It ties into “my narrative of self” (as my therapist calls it) where I feel as though I am not a particularly lucky person. Hello, run over by a truck here! So hope feels like a dangerous thing that is bound to hurt me.

I had my IVF transfer yesterday. Three embryos! With decent ratings. I’m so hopeful, so so hopeful. But this is final round three, and I don’t know if hope is even warranted. 👇 me and my honey all suited up.

Then there’s the art fair that I applied to. It’s very prestigious called the stARTup Art Fair, and open only to artists who aren’t currently represented by any galleries. Since I handle my own sales, I qualify! I submitted early. I’m proud of the work, I sort of have an “in” with one of the judges, I want this and it would be a big thing for me. I’m hopeful. 👇 a piece I submitted

Finally. Finally, (I’m shaking now from writing the scariest most precious things down for you all to read) I’ve been working on a story for 8 years now. It started out as a journal of my pain from my accident and along the way it morphed into a novel about a girl who works in a casino. My editor calls it “chicklit noir” and my other editor, Laurel from Dear Writers scrubbed out all my silly nonsense, tightened it up, and perfected it for me. Now, my first editor, Jay, says we’ll start approaching agents. I feel really good about my story, it’s something different and interesting. But again… too much hope.

So I’m sitting here completely terrified. TERRIFIED. Hope has never treated me kindly before, I don’t know why it would treat me well now. All I can do is bide my time and wait to be punched in the face one way or another. Or all three ways! But still I hope maybe for once everything will go my way.

Buffy Thoughts 1.21.15

If you’ve been following my blog for more than a month you probably already know two things about me.
1. I love to write about The Walking Dead and 2. I like to list all the times I’ve written about TWD.
BOOM. Here I answered Dora & Cee’s TWD questionnaire
Here I found TWD jewelry for Dora
Here is about the Talking Dead
Here is the lame fan merch sold on AMC
And finally here, the Sex Ed Fail blog that started it all.
But what you all don’t know? Before TWD, there was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And you know what? It’s still just as good as back in college when I eagerly anticipated each Tuesday night’s new episode. I love it. And I’m rewatching it right now.
Grr Argh
Which leads me to my deep Buffy question of the hour.

What’s the Buffy team’s deal with the name William and its derivatives anyways? They’ve got 1. Spike AKA William the Bloody NÉE William Pratt 2. Angel NÉE Liam (Irish for William) 3. Willow AKA Will 4. Willy the Snitch and in the comics there’s 5. Billy the Boy Slayer. Does anybody know? Because that is a lot of Will-ish names for one show.

Today’s bangles: silver bangle from my dad from 1993, silver bangle my dad gave my mom before then, Goodwill glass beads, Oneida spoon cuff, HiHo Silver knot cuff, 2 Swarovski crystal bangles.

Before anybody says anything: Yes “five by five” is a Faithism but my other Buffy needlepoint (beep me if there’s an apocalypse) didn’t turn out well.

Today I am wearing a rather excessive amount of bangles, even by my standards. Maybe because I have a lot of work to do in the shop? Yesterday was my personal checklist day (everything completed woohoo) and today is the work checklist. Undoing Christmas is so sad, isn’t it?

My instagram friends will recognize this pic. We took down our tree last night now I must dismantle the 4 trees in my store. How long do you keep yours up for?

Today’s bangles: black bakelite, Hermès Rose de Compas, multi color bakelite, blue beaded, petit pointe needlepoint bangle, swarovski bangle, red rhinestone bangle from India.

12.27.14 back from the dead

Oh! Hey there! It’s been a while, right? December kills me every year. Those last 14 days leading up to Christmas is solely work and sleep, that’s it. I still have this weird hangover. But now it’s over and I’m wearing cozy pants! And a big sweater and my honey is making some coffee. But I have some crazy shit to tell you all.

First, some background. I started buying bracelets by the pound from Goodwill for the purpose of selling some jewelry at my shop (ok, really because I love bangles, duh, but selling is an added perk.) These Goodwill bracelet grab bags are a crap shoot. In one lot there were two pieces of Sterling Taxco stamped jewelry. But that kind of thing is balanced by a bunch of junk stuff I throw out, then there’s the in between fun and inexpensive costume jewelry. Each time I open my grabbag I’m hoping for Bakelite. Bakelite, for those who don’t know is a vintage type of resin/plastic jewelry that was very mod and popular in the 60s. The black rhinestone one on my wrist in the pic above is probably Bakelite.

So when this 👆showed up I was stoked. I thought it might be Bakelite. But you know what? This is not Bakelite. Guess WTF this treasure is?!?

Fucking ivory.

Giant ass ivory bangle.

My picture makes my arm look deformed long, but you get the idea. This is a huge bangle that was part of my $20 for 10 lbs of bangles. Now the question is, what do I do with my new albatross? It’s gorgeous, it’s valuable, it’s impossible to sell and maybe even illegal for me to try. It represents the needless slaughter of one of my favorite animals (elephant). I’ve never seen anything like it before.

Today’s bangles include two XMas presents- the yellow enamel bangle was from one of my brothers, and the Hermès Colliers de Chien is from my honey. I cried when I opened it, I assumed with my dad’s death that was the end of the line for my Hermès bangle collection. But my honey! I love him. The rest of the bangles are Goodwill, black rhinestone square Bakelite, a red jeweled Indian bangle, black needlepoint bangle, Swarovski crystal bangle.

#15 VERY GIFTED: GIFT IDEAS

Gift ideas for:
*the Knitter
*the Needlepointer
*the Perfectionist

In my effort to be an 85 year old 35 year old, I needlepoint. I knit. I wear nightgowns with pockets (pockets are good for kleenexes), I enjoy watching the BBC. And I know I am not alone. Hey you crafter makers out there! And spouses or children or siblings of crafter makers out there! I have some gift ideas for you.

knit bangle
First of all, some guidelines for shopping for us crafters. We love new supplies! But we also love ideas. Most of us belong to Ravelry but so… to shop for your knitting gift receiver pick up some yarn from the local knitting store. Don’t be overwhelmed by the selection, pick some color or size that you think is pretty. My local store is super helpful and if yours is anything like it, they will ask about the project ideas and recommend quantities of yarn for the project. For the idea? Voila! Here is the link for the pattern above See Mi Knit’s pattern.

NP bangle
Ideally you would find a needlepoint bracelet bangle KIT for your beloved needlepointer. But the only ones I could find sucked big time. I guess you could swap out thread (floche) colors to improve them but lacking that, I recommend this Etsy vintage find. I would wear this and claim I had made it myself. Then I would feel bad and attempt to make an identical one.

For the perfectionist crafter, we gotta talk Martha Stewart.
http://www.marthastewart.com/250669/wool-bangles#907485
You’ve got to do some legwork here. Look at the various Martha Stewart project videos. Pick a style you like, find basket, pickup the required supplies, stuff the supplies and a bottle of nice wine into the basket, then type up a pretty card with the URL hand written in it for her reference. VOILA you too channeled your inner Martha making something special.

The daily disclaimer: I would be remiss if I didn’t offer the link to my online store… I write these posts for my love of jewelry and gift giving, there’s no sponsors here but ME for MYSELF 😀
