Living in the same city as my mom I see her a lot. But even so, I walked over here yesterday after work. I felt like Michonne with my honey’s army backpack full of gear (by gear I mean makeup and high heels), my two doggies on leashes trailing behind me, stomping through the wilderness of San Francheesie. Once here, my mom and I ate cheese and tried to connect her computer to her TV. But to no avail. I think it takes more than shoving an ethernet cable into each device. You can start calling me a technology wiz at any point now.

Then my mom said “Oh I have some old bangles for you!” And lucky me, the luckiest of all girls, my mom gave me these two big bangles from my dad to her from back in the eighties. Both have special inscriptions in them.

So I am thankful for many things today. For my mom and my brothers (even when I am annoyed by them), my honey, and my doggies, and for the air that I breath. Happy Thanksgiving to you all, too!

It’s 6 o’clock somewhere! Actually, right here. It is 6 o’clock here after a busy work day. But I wanted to show you guys today’s bangles because I have a new one. Remember my desire for a figa charm bracelet? Of course you do, because you are awesome. I picked up some figa charms and took them to my usual place, Hutten Jewelers, and Izabella put them on a bracelet for me. I feel luckier already. The other bracelets are a silver Cuff from my dad, a North Africanish bangle, the new figa charm bracelet and my old charm seashell bracelet. Keep your figas crossed for me.

Charmed, I’m Sure

#2 VERY GIFTED: GREAT GIFT IDEAS

Gifts for:
*The Cutie Pie Nieces 2yrs to 13yrs
*The Avengers Fan Girl
*The World Traveler

Remember how I recommended starting a gift tradition? Well nothing is easier for a gift tradition than a charm bracelet. They come in all sorts, but the best ones you add a charm and grow them over the years. You can stick with a theme: all cats! Or places you’ve visited! Favorite foods! Winning sports teams! Etc. The options are ENORMOUS.

For my super cutie little nieces I started a tradition of Charmits. It’s very affordable jewelry: mostly rainbows and robots. You buy the $9 chain and select a bunch of fun charm options. The best part is Charmits are not something so precious that a lost or damaged charm would result in a broken heart.
milk and cookies
Are you kidding me?!? So freaking cute.
hamster
WOT! Tiny hamster! *head explodes*

Hold up a second, I need to collect myself.

Clearly, big girls like cutie charms too. A special shout out goes to all the comic book fangirls. Because guess what? Santa’s got the perfect geek girl charms for you, too.
avengers
Yep, those are some Avengers Bow Charms hand made by Ganda Kris. Heads up, these are BYOCB (BYO charm bracelet), however.

Charm bracelets are not just for girls and fan girls. What about that favorite Aunt of yours, the glamorous world traveler? Gump’s has you covered. How fancy you wanna be? Silver or Gold? Because there’re options in both.

Above is an example of the completed bracelet, which, if you’re as impatient as I am, that’s also a contender.

Still looking for charm bracelet ideas? Don’t worry, it’s coming.

The daily disclaimer: I would be remiss if I didn’t offer the link to my online store… I write these posts for my love of jewelry and gift giving, there’s no sponsors here but ME for MYSELF 😀

Today I received a comment on one of my blog posts, a post that I’m particularly proud of because its subject is bleak and personal but I worked very hard to balance the dark hurt aspects with humor and light. Because everything has a humorous side. Don’t get me going on colon cancer. It’s a fucking laugh riot. See? That was funny because colon cancer is NOT a laugh riot, the punchline subverts my entire thesis statement. Humor, right? Hahaha. I’m fucked up, ok?

Anyway, the post I’m talking about is Ghost Dad LOL. I’ve really appreciated the various comments I have received on it. Up until today. Because today’s commenter, not someone with a WP blog, said “love stream of consciousness writing…no going back, editing”… WTF DUDE! Do you not realize HOW MUCH going back and editing I do on each and every post? Sure, sometimes grammar errors slip thru, sometimes that grammar error is intentional, sometimes I misspell something and don’t catch it but NEVER NOT EVER have I posted a stream of consciousness post. Maybe in a comment once or twice. Sort of?

I completely acknowledge that I am twisting my own panties in a bunch with very little cause. Fine, the commenter attempted a compliment. Maybe he doesn’t know what stream of consciousness is?

If that’s the case, here’s stream of consciousness:
Typing odn an ipad sucks and my fingers move too slow. I hate this song right now, shoudlnt have eaten that whole oanini. Greta more typos. Fat fingers. Cokd table. wtf.

👆That’s a pretty garbage blog post, right? Say what you like about my writing, but don’t ever say that I don’t go back and edit. That is the realm where I am KING.

Today’s bangles are: flacons de parfum, rouge Calèche, silver Taxco bangle, skinny silver Tiffany’s bangle, and wide Tiffany’s bangle from Christmas 1994.

Now ask me my opinion on starting a blog post with “I”; this rant train is the express and we are making no stops today.

11.21.14 vexillology

IMG_3062.JPG
Lately I’ve been all about the Goodwill bracelet finds. There’re so many treasures to be found at Goodwill, stuff that has a feeling to it. It’s beautiful that one item was cared by somebody, and now it’s under my watch. There’s a special link between me and them. I think that’s why I love ID bracelets so much. It’s actually pretty funny how I have this odd little collection of other people’s ID bracelets, but none in my own name.

The flag charm bracelet is also a Goodwill find. My dad was a big flag collector, a vexillologist if you will. I paid more than my usual Goodwill budget to purchase this guy, $19.99, an outrageous sum in the world of Goodwill shopping! Now armed with my inherited collection of flag books I’ve set about IDing the various flags.

IMG_3063.JPG
From left to right:
1. Italy (but the center stamp is slightly incorrect)
2. Netherlands or Luxembourg
3. UK
4. USA
5. Canadian Red Ensign (the predecessor to Royal Union Flag which was replaced in turn by the familiar Flag of Canada)
6. France
7. Belgium
8. Tria Juncto In Uno medal: “the Order of the Bath”, 4th most senior of the British Orders of Chivalry
9. Standard of the Governor-General of the Belgian Congo 1936-1960
10. Luxembourg or Netherlands
11. USSR
12. Belge flag number two
13. Poland
So what I’ve deduced so far is this is a Belgian charm bracelet from the early to mid 1900’s, maybe a collection of Belgian allies? I don’t know. I welcome anybody with some historical insight to chime in! What do all think? Any theories?

11.19.14 silver sleuth

IMG_3047.JPG
Last night at dinner my mom gave me this bracelet 👆 that I am wearing today. It was black with tarnish and she was uncertain if it was from her mom, or from my namesake, my mom’s Aunt Margaret. I am basically Nancy Drew when it comes to the internet sleuthing, and I successfully Nancy Drewed the isht out of this puppy.

First, I polished this up, then I started my research. Through my googling skills I quickly found some very similar pieces listed on eBay and Etsy. These were variously listed as vintage Mexican or Aztec of Mayan. But, from what I’ve seen, Taxco (Mexico’s main silver city) stamps their silver Taxco. This bracelet has no such stamp. Nor does it sport the standard, legally required 925 that indicates a piece is Sterling. But all of this could maybe be explained due to the age of my new bracelet.

However, internet sleuthing was not yet complete! There is a stamp, it’s simply one I hadn’t seen before. 0.900…. Again to the google where I learned this is a South American manner of stamping silver.

Mystery solved! Between my Grandmother (Brazilian) and my Great Aunt (American) this bracelet was most likely my Grandmother’s. So from one Brazilian to another, thank you Grandmother! And thank you Google.

The Walking Dora

The other day I asked Dora about her second favorite TV show because her first favorite is The Walking Dead, and I’ve already sought out zombie jewelry about twelve times now. Here I found the disappointing branded Walking Dead store, here I covered all things zombie and here I took down the MAN in my TWD, Sex Ed Fail post.

Maybe we can admit two things straight off the bat. First, I am prone to exaggeration. Second, I’ve probably beaten the zombie bracelet theme to death. Unfortunately for you all, it then rose from the dead and bit me ONE MORE TIME. Because, guess what? Dora and I both love TWD that much! I’m throwing Sup Darling under the wheels of the zombie bus as well. How’s that for human remains in the exhaust pipe, huh? Whatchu got to say about that?!

First up, what the fresh noise is this thing that Rick’s holding??
Ring
I found it on the Craufthaus website, made by a Rebecca Rose. I don’t know about you, but to me this looks an awful lot like a Walking Dead scene atop a ring. Which is kind of awesome.

BLoody Charms
Now, I’ve showcased some zombie charm bracelets before but this one is different in that it is significantly bloodier. MM hmm blood. Made by Antonis Art Asylum on Etsy. Talk about dedication to authenticity! But wait.. shouldn’t these tools be covered in blackish green blood if they were used on the zombies… um?? Are these tools from the Governor’s toolbox? :/ Ahem. Moving onwards!

five gold skulls
I want a five gold skull trophy bracelet! Emphasis on ‘skull trophy’ not ‘trophy bracelet’. I guess technically, this is a necklace but I’m sure we can contact Starta, the designer, maybe he would hook a fellow zombiephile up? He should for the amount of money these gold skulls cost. I’d like to point out his TWD necklace is on display right next to his cuddly teddy bear charm necklace. Watch your back, Teddy. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

skull cuff
OMG even Polyvore is getting in on the zombie hookups. This skulls and skins brings a little bit of skull to that classy bracelet collection of yours. Or mine.

There you have it, there is no bottom to the zombie/jewelry pit. Please enjoy the view of all the skulls while we free fall thru this together. Just a quick aside: I’m writing this while listening to some MJ, and I just realized Man in the Mirror is the Governor’s jam. Make that change. Or not. Shamo.

11.12.14 year of living undangerously

IMG_3009.JPG
If you could go back in time, live your life over knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?

Me, I have a laundry list of items.
-Don’t bother with that ‘My So Called Life’ letter writing campaign, Angela Chase is over.
-Love is easy. Worrying if you are phoning someone too much is a sign that they are the wrong person. The right person will welcome all your phone calls AND visit you in the hospital after knowing you for just seven days.
-Chewing on your lip repeatedly DOES cause wrinkles.
-January 22, 2007? Don’t ride the bike to work. Take the day off, why don’t you.
-Credit cards do NOT buy happiness, cut those puppies up.
-That time your flight lays over in Heathrow and you are the only one there who recognizes the RZA? Go say hi, tell him you’re a fan.
-That self destructive phase? Not worth it.

That last one there is something that I still struggle with. It’s easy when everything hurts to look for an outlet, a fight, drugs, sex, anything to make yourself feel better. It’s hard NOT to, even. But I’m too old for that. My hangover will be too brutal, the downs far outweigh the ups. But today hurts. I’m officially an IVF round two drop out. My body isn’t responding to the drugs. I’ve only got one little follicle to show for it. Not enough to proceed.

Today’s bangles: my dad’s Rolex, silver sea shell charm bracelet, polymer clay bracelets

11.11.14 sunny San Fra-no-freezie

IMG_3008.JPG
It’s totally not freezie today, or at all, or maybe ever again even. SF is never cold enough to snow, but it does get charmingly brisk this time of year. USUALLY. But I don’t know, this drought and warm spell? It continues to stretch out before us now, making most SFers grouchy. It leaves my bedroom uncomfortably warm at night! Nobody knows how to deal with this! We aren’t equipped for warm weather. Should I wear sandals? Or will I get cold by the end of the day? I just don’t know!

Today’s bangles are: brass bow bracelet, silver bangle, Guadalquivir bangle by Hermès, seashell charm bracelet, Tiffany’s silver latch bangle, and my extra special Crazy Loom bracelet from my niece.

11.6.14 bringing on the heartbreak

IMG_2977.JPG
IMG_2967.JPG
Yesterday I promised you guys some heartbreak. Here it is, in the picture below my wrist shot (so sexy!) and above this paragraph (also so sexy!).

That’s Bandit at around 5:45 pm on our first day of work since the time change. He’s sitting there, alert, looking out the shop door, waiting. Waiting for who? For my dad.

It’s dark, obviously closing time, all signs indicating to Bandit that one of his favorite people should be arriving any moment to pick us up and give us a ride home 💔 Bandit hasn’t done this for months now. But this time change, it triggered a reminder of the habit in him I think. It was so ingrained in us. One of the recurring thoughts I had after my dad died was “but how will we get home now?” Late afternoon continues to be a hard time of day for me.

Dogs are amazing, aren’t they? Poor Bandit (and Leroy too, but he’s a bit of a dum dum), I wonder what he’s thinking? How they experience sorrow? Two of my dog owning acquaintances died recently. Dick, the owner of my local hardware store and Diana, a customer of mine. I really felt for their families, of course. I can relate to them and what they are going thru.

But my heart just broke completely thinking of their dogs, Lola and Hudson respectively. These were both people, like myself, who spent 24/7 with their dogs. Lola is this blind chihuahua and she followed Dick up and down the hardware aisles. They were a cute pair, Dick this lumbering old man and Lola this ‘perfect fit for Paris Hilton’s purse’ tiny dog.

Diana’s dog Hudson has the most soulful eyes. He’s a small black Maltese. Diana went thru many months of chemo and surgeries, and you could read the concern on Hudson’s face. He knew something was going on. So when he walked into the shop the other day, I hugged him and I told him that I am sorry for his loss. It felt like the right thing to do.

Those dogs, their littles lives, the centers of their universes are gone. How do they deal? I know they miss their person, but do they sense the total absence? Or are they like Bandit, hopeful that if the stars align just right and they wait patiently enough, that person will return?

Today’s bangles are: Les Ponts de Paris by Hermès, trellis silver cuff from Tiffany’s and my dad’s two face watch by Baum & Mercier. Below is the engraving I added to the back of it.
